Dummy CCTV Cameras to Strengthen Camera Surveillance Systems

People who do not have a lot of money to spend on a security system often make use of a dummy CCTV camera to save money.  These cameras look just like the real cameras, sometimes down to the tiniest detail.  These are the low cost alternative available for practically any type of security camera, from the standard wall mounted viewer to the sophisticated dome camera.

The main thing to consider when installing dummy CCTV cameras is the positioning of the cameras.  They really ought to be readily viewable by anyone entering the premises.  After all, their main function is to put doubt in the mind of the criminal.  It can not do that if it is out of sight.  Also, some sort of signage helps.  Something that lets everyone know that there may be video recording taking place.   Fake security cameras can have LED lights, motion and panning capabilities, which add to their realism and also draw more attention to them.

Of course, the number one drawback to these dummy cameras is that they do not record anything.  This drawback is good reason to consider using them only in non-essential areas, where actual footage of events comes in a far second place to the actual prevention of crime.  The point here is that if you actually need to record events, then intermingle fake cameras with real ones.  This lowers your overall cost while still recording what you need.

For camera surveillance systems that are already in place, their protection capabilities can be strengthened by taking two simple steps.  First, make sure that all of the cameras are appropriately advertised.  That can be done with simple signage or just the positioning of the cameras.  Secondly, take the low cost investment and add some dummy CCTV cameras in areas that already have sparse coverage.  This will, no doubt, strengthen the overall effectiveness of your current security system.
