Looking At Replacement Remote Controls

If you’re looking at replacing a remote or consolidating your remotes, then you’ve probably looked at a universal remote. That’s a remote that will work with any manufacturer’s devices. Once you purchase your remote, you’ll need to program it to work with your device. There are three basic ways to program your replacement remote controls, entering device codes, “teaching” your remote, and a programming with a computer via USB cable.

The first way is using device codes, it’s easy to do, but tedious. You push a key combination, usually the button for the device you want, then the learn, or program button, or whatever your remote calls it. You then push in 3 to 5 digit codes that correspond with the maker of the device you’re trying to control, lets say a television. After you’ve put the code in, you usually push the on/off button, if the television goes off, you’re done. If the T.V. doesn’t go off, then try again. There’s usually a list of codes and you just keep trying, until you find one that works.

The second way of programming a remote is a learning remote. This is a special remote that can learn codes from other remotes. It’s much easier than code punching, but it won’t work if you’ve lost the original remote, or it’s broken. A learning remote is more for consolidating remotes that you already have.

The final way to program a remote (and only certain brands and models – i.e. Logitech Harmony) is by hooking it to your computer via a USB cable, and then going to the company website, and following the onscreen directions. There will be a set up wizard that will walk you through the process. You’ll enter the types and manufacturers of devices you want to control, and the wizard will set up your remote via the USB cable.

If you’ve got a broken remote you want to replace, or you want to consolidate a couple of devices then the code programming remote will probably be fine for you. If you want to consolidate remotes, with a few devices then the learning remote will make it easier, even better if you’ve got lots of devices. The USB remote is for people that want an easy set up or for those that have a system with lots of devices – the top of the line Harmony remotes controls 15 devices.
