Post HeaderIcon The Different Types of Magellan GPS Devices and GPS Products

The Magellan GPS company was first established all the way back in 1986 with the main aim of specializing in products and devices that are related to GPS.  They are now a direct competitor of both the larger Garmin and TomTom GPS brands, although in terms of market share they lag behind both companies when it comes to overall sales, coverage, and customer satisfaction.

All of the companies described here produce some of the best GPS units that are available on the consumer market – but when it comes to comparing the brands, how does Magellan actually fare?  Let’s have a quick look at their product quality as well as the price range and capacity of the models that they develop.

Garmin Has a Wider Range of GPS Devices

When compared to Garmin then Magellan don’t come anywhere close in terms of the sheer breadth and volume of units that are available.  This simple fact gives Garmin a very big advantage over Magellan because the end consumers and customers are able to choose from a variety of designs, extra and additional features as well as competitive pricing ranges. The Garmin range of GPS devices are also know to be considered amongst the best GPS units for a variety of different market – they produce devices that can be used by outdoor adventurers, aero planes, in boats, sporting products, and even for people who want to go fishing with their fish finders… a very broad range I am sure you will agree..

So how do Magellan GPS devices compare to Garmin?  What is clear is that Magellan GPS devices are basically designed for the most basic and average users.  There are no real thrills or advanced functionality elements to their models, which are targeted at a general population that has basic needs.  The flipside of this means that Magellan GPS units tend to be cheaper and more affordable, as well as being far more convenient and easier when it comes to using them on an everyday basis.

Magellan Maestro – Their Best Selling Unit and Device

In terms of the products that they range then car navigation is the first market that springs to mind.  Their leading unit is the Magellan Maestro which comes in a few different models including the 3100, 3140, the 4000 and 4040. The newest Magellan GPS available at the moment is the Magellan 4050 which also happens to be their high-end model due to the advanced features it comes with.  They also have an entry-level model which is the Magellan Maestro 3100 – this does not come with voice command capability though, and everything needs to be tapped into the display for in-car navigation.

More advanced users with a higher budget would probably opt for the Magellan Maestro 4050 – it features full voice command control, voice directions, turn by turn directions, FM receiver for traffic jam information as well as hands free calling capability using Bluetooth technology.

Magellan RoadMate – For Automotive or Outdoor Use

Other than the Maestro models, the Magellan Company has also produced another product line which go by the name of Magellan RoadMate. There is only one cheap model in this range which is the 2200T.  This is designed for more than one use which is very handy – as it can be docked in a car window or be used as an outdoor GPS handheld device.  Because it is portable and waterproof it has become a favorite with people who love the outdoors and want one GPS device to suit all purposes.  For example it’s particularly popular with hikers and climbers who drive their car to a destination and then start trekking.

Magellan has some other models too which include the Magellan Roadmate 2000, 300, 3050, 360, 700 and 800 devices.  One not known too well is the CrossoverGPS which can be used for marine-based navigation scenarios.
